Building Pads & Site Prep in Elizabethtown, KY
On Hardin County karst, where a pad sits matters as much as how it is built. We look at how the lot drains, then cut, fill, compact and stone a pad your builder can start on.
Firm Pads on Hardin County Karst
In Hardin County, the first question on any building site is where the water goes. Much of the ground around Elizabethtown is karst: clay over limestone, with sinkholes and low sunken spots where rain drains straight down into the rock. Put a house or a shop in the wrong place on ground like that, or send roof and yard water toward a soft spot, and the ground can settle under the building years later.
Pistol Ridge Land Services builds building pads in Elizabethtown for homes, garages, metal shops and pole barns. We travel to Hardin County from our base in Finley, in Taylor County. Trey walks the lot first and looks at how it drains. Then he cuts and fills, compacts the fill in lifts and tops the pad with stone. He has 30 years of experience and runs every job.
The finished pad is level, tight and bigger than the building, with the ground shaped so water sheds off it and heads where it should. A gravel approach lets the concrete truck back up to the forms. The same crew can do the clearing before the pad, the trenching for water and electric, and the gravel drive, so the dirt side of the job stays with one outfit.

How we build a pad in Hardin County

- Pad kept off sunken ground
- Fill built up in compacted lifts
- Stone topping graded for the slab
- Water shaped away from the pad
- Gravel approach for the concrete truck
Pad Building Around Elizabethtown: Local Notes
Sinkholes and shallow limestone
A dip in a field that never holds water after a rain is worth a second look. It may be a sinkhole, and a sinkhole is no place for fill and a building. Trey keeps the pad off those spots and tells you what he sees. Where a pad can sit, and how close to a sinkhole you may build, is a question for your builder, an engineer or the planning office. Limestone is often shallow here too, so a cut may stop sooner than the plan hoped, and the pad gets raised with fill instead.
A growing town and the country around it
Elizabethtown has kept adding houses. Around town the jobs are house pads on new lots and pads for detached garages behind existing homes. Out toward Cecilia, Glendale, Rineyville and Vine Grove there is more room, and the work turns to shops, pole barns and homes on acreage. A lot of this ground lies flatter than the knob country closer to our base, which makes the cut small and the drainage harder. Flat clay needs the pad raised and the ground around it shaped to move water away.
Plans, permits and locates
Most Elizabethtown pads are built from a builder's plan, and that is how we like it. Give us the drawing and we build the pad to its size, place and floor height. Ask the city or county planning office what your building needs before work starts, and whether your lot has a drainage plan to follow. Kentucky 811 is called at least two full working days ahead of digging. In town there are more buried lines than on a farm, so the marks matter. Anything private, like a line to a well or a shed, is yours to point out.

Elizabethtown Pads FAQ
Can you build a house pad on karst ground in Hardin County?
Yes, with care about where it sits. Most Hardin County lots have a good spot for a pad on firm clay over limestone. The spots to stay off are sinkholes and sunken areas. Trey looks at the lot, tells you what he sees, and builds the pad so water runs away from it instead of soaking in beside it.
Who builds shop pads and pole barn pads near Elizabethtown, KY?
Pistol Ridge Land Services builds them in Elizabethtown, Cecilia, Glendale, Rineyville, Vine Grove and Radcliff. The pad is leveled, compacted in lifts, topped with stone and built larger than the building, with a gravel approach for trucks. Our shop and pole barn pads page explains what a building crew looks for.
Do you fill in a sinkhole to make a building pad in Elizabethtown?
It is not something to plan on. Filling a sinkhole and building on it is asking for trouble, and there can be rules about it too. Solid ground is the better place for a pad. If the only spot you have is close to a sinkhole, talk with an engineer or the planning office first, then talk it through with Trey when he looks at the lot.
Will you travel to Hardin County for a single garage pad?
For most pad jobs, yes. A garage pad with its gravel approach is a real job, and it often comes with a little grading or a trench on the same trip. Call (270) 272-8739, tell Trey where the lot is and what is going on it, and he will tell you straight whether it makes sense.
