Pond Digging in Central Kentucky

Done Right the First Time

A pond that holds water starts with picking the right spot and building the dam right. Get either one wrong and you own an expensive mud hole.

Pistol Ridge Land Services digs new ponds and reworks old ones for farms and landowners across central Kentucky. We look at how water moves across your ground, where the clay is, and what you want the pond for, whether that's livestock water, fishing, or just something good to look at from the porch.

Then we dig it, shape the banks, build the dam and put the dirt we take out to work on your property instead of leaving it in a pile.

What's Included

Pond work we do

  • New farm and livestock ponds
  • Recreational and fishing ponds
  • Dam and bank shaping
  • Cleaning out silted-in ponds
  • Reworking and enlarging existing ponds
  • Spreading and grading the spoil dirt

Picking the spot

The best pond sites catch enough runoff to stay full without taking on so much that the dam gets overrun in a storm. Soil matters as much as the shape of the land: good clay holds water, and rock or gravel seams don't. We walk the ground with you before a bucket goes in.

Old ponds

Ponds fill in over the years with silt and cattails until there isn't much pond left. Cleaning one out and reshaping the banks often costs less than starting a new one, and you keep a site that already holds water. While we're there we can handle clearing around the banks and grading the dirt we take out.

Questions

Pond Digging FAQ

How much does it cost to dig a pond?

Size and depth drive the cost, along with how the site lays, what the soil is like and how far the dirt has to move. A pond tucked into a natural draw costs less than one dug into flat ground. We'll look at your site and give you a quote.

Will my pond hold water?

That comes down to soil and site. Kentucky clay holds water well, and rock seams don't. We look at the ground before digging and tell you honestly what we think of the spot.

Can you clean out an existing pond?

Yes. We clean out silted-in ponds, reshape the banks and rework dams.

When is the best time to dig a pond?

Dry weather. The ground has to carry heavy equipment and the clay has to be workable, so late summer and fall are usually the easiest stretch.
