Pond Digging in Columbia, KY

Pond Building on Adair County Hills

Hill ground makes pond building look easy. Every farm around Columbia, KY has a hollow that seems to be begging for a dam. The trouble is that steep ground sends water down in a rush, a dam across a narrow hollow gets tall quickly, and a dam that is not tied into solid ground on both hillsides will seep or wash. A pond that goes out in its first big rain is nearly always a dam or spillway problem, not bad luck.

Pistol Ridge Land Services travels to Adair County from Finley, on the other side of Green River Lake. Trey looks at how much hillside drains to the spot, where the clay is, and what the sides of the hollow are made of. A hollow dam should sit on ground stripped of topsoil and roots, with a core trench cut into tight ground and the fill built up in thin packed layers. The spillway belongs in firm ground at one end, not across fresh fill. Trey builds it with the excavator and skid steers.

The result is a pond that fits the hollow: deep enough at the dam to carry stock through a dry spell, with a spillway that takes storm water around the dam and not over it. Banks are dressed, the dam is smoothed for seeding, and leftover dirt is graded out wherever you can use it. You get a straight quote before the first bucket and a plain report of what the ground showed.

Hollow Ponds Near Columbia: What Matters

Steep draws and fast water

Much of Adair County is hill ground, with wooded hollows running down toward Russell Creek and the Green River. A steep draw can fill a pond quickly, which is good, and can overrun a dam quickly, which is not. Around Columbia the spillway should be sized for the hillside above it, the top of the dam kept level and well above the spillway, and the pond set where the hollow widens so you get more water for the dirt moved.

Cattle farms, lake-end places and new home sites

Ponds near Gradyville, Glens Fork and Breeding are mostly for cattle on hill pasture, where water in each field saves a lot of work. Out toward Knifley and the Green River Lake end of the county, and on new home sites near Columbia, people want a pond for fishing and for the view. Either kind may need the site opened up first, and the same crew handles land clearing around Columbia before the dig.

When dam height becomes a state matter

Because hollow dams run tall, know the numbers. Kentucky's dam safety permit applies at 25 feet high or 50 acre-feet of storage. Most farm ponds stay under both, but a deep hollow can surprise you, so confirm with the Division of Water, and ask about a stream construction permit if a creek runs through the site. The Adair County Conservation District and the NRCS office for the county advise on siting. Build in the dry weeks of late summer and fall. More in our permit guide for Kentucky ponds.

Questions

Columbia Ponds FAQ

Can you build a pond on steep hill ground in Adair County?

Usually, if there is a place where the hollow widens and the hillsides have clay to tie a dam into. Very steep, narrow hollows give little water for a tall dam and are hard on spillways. Trey looks at the spot and will tell you plainly if it is too steep to build right.

How tall can a pond dam be near Columbia, KY before the state gets involved?

Kentucky's dam safety permit applies to dams 25 feet high or more, or holding 50 acre-feet or more. Most farm ponds are under that. How the height is measured for your site is a question for the Kentucky Division of Water, so call them before building a tall dam in a deep hollow.

How deep should a pond be on an Adair County cattle farm?

Deep enough at the dam to carry water through a dry summer, and to keep fish through a hard winter if you plan to stock it. The right depth depends on the hollow, the clay and how much hillside feeds the pond. Trey sets the depth on site, not from a chart, and keeps the deep water near the dam.
