Pond Digging in Bardstown, KY

Ponds for Nelson County Farms and Acreage

You bought a few acres outside Bardstown, built the house, and now you want water to look at from the back porch. Or you run cattle near Bloomfield and the old pond is down to a puddle. Both jobs come down to the same two things in Nelson County: clay that will hold, and limestone that will not. Rock can turn up in any cut here, and a pond dug onto it is a hole that drains.

Pistol Ridge Land Services travels to Bardstown from our base in Taylor County. Trey comes out, walks the property and tells you where a pond will work and where it will not. He looks at how much ground drains to the spot, since a pond with too little runoff never fills and one with too much needs a serious spillway. Then he digs it, builds the dam, and shapes banks to suit a fishing pond, a stock pond or one that is mostly for looks.

For a home pond that means easy slopes you can mow, a clean edge and a dam that does not look like a pile of dirt. For a farm pond it means depth where it counts and banks that stand up to cattle. The spoil can go to work too: building up a low yard, shaping a drive, or backing a building pad in Bardstown for the shop you have in mind.

Bluegrass Limestone and Ponds Around Bardstown

Rolling limestone ground, knobs to the south

Most of Nelson County is rolling Bluegrass ground over limestone, with clay of uneven depth on top. Toward New Haven and Boston the land breaks into knobs, with steeper hollows and more shale. On the limestone side we look for the deepest clay and keep the dig shallow enough to stay in it. On the knob side the hollows make natural pond sites, and the work is mostly in the dam. Either way, the ground gets checked before you get a quote.

What people build ponds for here

Bardstown has grown, and a lot of the ponds wanted now are for people on a few acres who like to fish and like the look of water. Farms toward Bloomfield, Chaplin and Cox's Creek still need stock water, and plenty of their old ponds need the silt taken out. A home pond usually gets more finish work: smoother banks, a tidier dam and spoil graded into the yard. A stock pond gets more depth and less polish. Tell us which you want, since it changes the job and what a pond costs.

Before you dig: permits and local offices

Kentucky's dam safety permit starts at a dam 25 feet high or 50 acre-feet of storage, which is larger than nearly all farm and home ponds. Work in or along a stream, such as the Beech Fork, the Rolling Fork or the creeks that feed them, can need a stream construction permit from the Division of Water. In a subdivision or inside city limits, ask the planning office about local rules too. The Nelson County Conservation District and the NRCS office for the county advise on siting. Questions

Bardstown Ponds FAQ

Can I dig a pond on a few acres outside Bardstown?

Often yes, if the lot has a spot with enough clay and enough ground draining to it. Small tracts have less runoff to work with, so the pond has to be sized to match. Check your deed and any subdivision rules, and ask the county planning office if you are unsure. Trey will look at the lot and tell you what fits.

Will a pond hold water on Nelson County limestone?

It can, where the clay over the rock is deep enough and there is no seam or sink under the site. That varies a great deal across Nelson County, sometimes within one field. Trey checks the ground before quoting and will say so if a spot looks risky. Nobody can promise a pond will hold, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

Does a pond add value to land around Bardstown?

We dig ponds and don't appraise land, so ask a local real estate agent for a number. What we can say is that a pond that holds water and looks cared for is something buyers of acreage notice, and a dry or leaking one is the opposite. Building it right the first time protects whatever value it adds.

Do you build ponds in New Haven, Bloomfield and Cox's Creek as well as Bardstown?

Yes. We travel to Bardstown and the rest of Nelson County, including Bloomfield, New Haven, Cox's Creek, Boston and Chaplin. Call (270) 272-8739 and tell Trey where the property is. He looks at the site in person and gives you a straight quote before any work starts.
