Pond Digging & Pond Building in Greensburg, KY
Stock ponds, fishing ponds and wildlife water for Green County farms and hunting land, dug where the clay is good and kept off the sinkholes and river gravel that drain a pond.
Ponds for Green County Farm Ground
Green County has every kind of pond ground within a few farms of each other. One place near Greensburg has deep clay in a draw that would hold water for a hundred years. The next has a sinkhole in the pasture, and the one after that is Green River bottom with gravel under the topsoil. Pick the wrong one and the pond drains as fast as the rain fills it.
Pistol Ridge Land Services is a short run from Greensburg, in Finley. Trey walks the farm with you, finds where the water comes from and where the clay is, and steers you off the spots that will not hold. Then the pond gets dug with a full-size excavator, the dam is built, and the banks are shaped to fit what you want the pond for. A dam should be keyed in and packed in layers.
For cattle, that means a pond that still has water in a dry September. For a hunting place, it may be a pond with a shallow edge, tucked near the timber where deer and ducks will use it. For a home, it is water you can see from the porch and fish with the grandkids. In every case the spoil is spread and graded and the site is left clean.

What Green County Ground Means for a Pond
River bottoms, ridges and sinks
The Green River winds through the middle of the county, and its bottoms are flat and rich, and river bottom ground can have sand and gravel under it that will not hold a pond. The ridges above can be rocky. Parts of the county are also karst, with sinkholes that carry water underground. The dependable pond sites around Greensburg are usually the clay draws in rolling pasture between the two, and that is where we look first. A grown-up draw can be opened with land clearing in Greensburg before the dig.
Cattle water, hunting land and old oil ground
Most ponds near Summersville, Pierce and Donansburg are for cattle, and many are old ponds that need the silt taken out, which is our pond cleanout work. Hunting land is the other big one: owners want water that holds game on the place. One more thing is particular to this area. There was an oil boom around Greensburg decades ago, so ask the family what they know about old well sites or lines on the farm. Tell us about any you know of. Kentucky 811 gets called before any digging either way.
Rules, offices and when to build
Work in or along a stream, which includes the river and the creeks that feed it, can need a stream construction permit from the Kentucky Division of Water. A separate dam safety permit applies at 25 feet of dam height or 50 acre-feet of storage, which is bigger than most farm ponds. The Green County Conservation District and the NRCS office that serves the county can help you pick a site. Bottom ground stays soft late, so the dry stretch from late summer into fall matters even more here. See the pond permit guide.

Greensburg Ponds FAQ
Can I put a pond in Green River bottom ground near Greensburg?
It is usually a poor spot. River bottoms often have sand and gravel under the topsoil, they flood, and work along a stream can need a permit from the Kentucky Division of Water. A clay draw up off the bottom is nearly always a better site. Trey will walk both with you and say which one he would build on.
Do you build ponds for deer and ducks on Green County hunting land?
Yes. A wildlife pond is built the same way as a stock pond, with a sound dam and good clay, but the shape can change: a gentler edge on one side, and a spot near cover. Tell Trey what you hunt and how you get into the property, and he will fit the pond to the land.
Are there buried lines to worry about when digging a pond in Green County?
There can be. Kentucky 811 has to be notified at least two full working days before digging so public utilities are marked, and a ticket is good for 21 days. Private lines are the owner's to point out: water lines to a barn, electric to a well and any old oil or gas lines you know of. Tell us what you know.
Who do I call about a pond site in Green County, KY?
Start with two calls. The Green County Conservation District or the NRCS office that serves the county can advise on soils and siting. Then call Pistol Ridge at (270) 272-8739, and Trey will come walk the ground and give you a straight quote. If a stream is involved, the Kentucky Division of Water answers the permit question.
