Land Clearing in Columbia, KY

Clearing a Lot You Can Build On

Most lots for sale around Columbia have two things in common: trees and slope. You can tell there is a pretty building spot in there somewhere, but you cannot see it, measure it or get a truck to it. Until the lot is cleared, your builder is guessing about the pad, the drive and how much dirt has to move.

Pistol Ridge Land Services comes down from Finley to work in Columbia and across Adair County. Trey clears with a full-size excavator and tracked skid steers and pulls every stump in the building area. That part is not optional on a house or shop site. A stump left under fill rots and leaves a soft spot, and soft spots under a pad turn into cracks in a slab.

Then the same machines move the dirt. On hill ground that means cutting the high side, filling the low side and shaping the lot so water runs around the building. You end up with one crew, one schedule and one quote from brush to finished pad. Outfits that only clear have to hand you off at that point. We keep going.

Adair County Hills, Timber and Rules

Hill ground changes how you clear

There is a lot of hill ground in Adair County, and clearing a slope is not like clearing a flat field. Take every tree off a steep bank and the topsoil heads for the bottom in the first hard rain. So we clear what the building, the drive and the yard need, and leave a band of trees where the hill needs holding. Stumps on the building spot come out. On the banks below it, we often leave the roots in to hold the dirt.

Shops, homes and cut-over timber

A lot of the clearing we do near Columbia is for metal buildings and new homes, on lots around town and out along the Cumberland Parkway. Farm calls come from Knifley, Glens Fork, Gradyville and Breeding, where pasture edges and old fields have grown up. We also get called to ground that was logged and left: tops, slash and stumps everywhere, with briars coming up through it. That can be put back into pasture or a building site, and it starts with getting the stumps out.

Burning the piles and what to check

Kentucky generally allows the natural growth from land clearing to be burned on the site it came from, subject to local rules. Lumber, trash, old tires and anything from a torn-down building can never go on the pile. During the spring and fall fire hazard seasons, daytime burning within 150 feet of woods or brush is not allowed. We pile the brush in the open, and the owner does the burning. Check with the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the fire department that covers your part of Columbia or the county. More in our burn rules guide.

Questions

Columbia Land Clearing FAQ

Can you clear a lot and build the pad for a shop in Columbia, KY?

Yes, and that is the main reason people call us. We clear the trees and brush, pull the stumps, cut and fill the lot, build the pad and put in the gravel approach. One crew does all of it, so the clearing is done with the pad in mind from the first tree.

Do you clean up logged-over land in Adair County?

Yes. Ground that was timbered and left in tops, slash and stumps can be put back to use. We pile the tops, pull the stumps where you want open ground and smooth it so it can be seeded or built on. Tell us what the land is for and we will clear it to suit.

How much of my wooded lot near Columbia should I clear?

Clear what you will use: the building, room to work around it, the drive, the yard and space for the septic field your installer lays out. Leave trees on steep banks and along the lines for privacy. It is easy to take more later and impossible to put a big oak back. Trey will walk it with you.

Do you clear land near Green River Lake in Adair County?

Yes. The upper end of Green River Lake reaches into Adair County near Knifley, and we clear home and cabin sites out that way. Much of the land around the lake is federal property managed by the Corps of Engineers, so have your corners and lines marked before we cut anything.
